Basil C. Smith, 79, of Atlantic, IA, died early Sunday morning, May 4, 2008 at the
Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center where he had been a resident for the last 2
½ years.
Basil
Charles Smith was born in Pottawattamie County, rural Griswold on January 27, 1929,
the son of Edward Carlton ³Carl² and Elva Adele (Reed) Smith. He attended rural schools. Basil lived with his parents and
following his fatherıs death in 1970, his mother moved to Atlantic from
Griswold in 1976. Basilıs mother died in 1979. Basil then lived on his own, first in an apartment on Maple
Street and then in the Midtown Apartments. He worked at Cass Incorporated doing various jobs until his
retirement in 1992. Prior to moving to his current residence, he lived at
Willow Heights.
Basil
was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Griswold. Basil was an avid
collector of calendars and catalogues.
He enjoyed going out to eat, going to the movies and shopping trips to
malls.
Survivors
include his four brothers; Donald and his wife Ethel of Atlantic, Ramon and his
wife Jean of Atlantic, Edward and his wife Jolene of Atlantic and Gordon and
his wife Carol of Lawrenceburg, TN; his three sisters; Helen Gregersen and her
husband Howard of Atlantic, Karen Smith of Atlantic and Doris Webster and her
husband Bill of Indianola, IA as well as several nieces and nephews.
Preceding
Basil in death were his parents, two brothers George and Cecil and one nephew,
Ronnie Smith.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold, Pastor Leon Hodges officiating. Burial will be in the Whipple Cemetery. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold and the family will be present from 6:30 to 7:30 Tuesday evening.
